Vincencia Toma, a resident of Radamata Village in Kota Tambulaka District, South West Sumba, has been positively impacted by the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. As a pregnant mother with a four-year-old child, Vincencia shared how the program has improved their daily meals. Previously, they had to make do with whatever they could find for breakfast, but with the introduction of the MBG program, her child now finishes every meal provided. Vincencia, who has been receiving free meals for nine days, mentioned the delicious taste and nutritional value of the meals for her child. She also highlighted how the program has helped establish better eating habits for her family, making it easier to manage food distribution throughout the day.
Being nine months pregnant, Vincencia is part of the group of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers benefiting from the MBG nutrition service kitchens in her village. She commended the government’s initiative to offer free and nutritious meals to rural mothers and children, emphasizing the positive impact on ensuring children receive protein-rich and varied meals. Vincencia expressed her desire for the program to continue long-term, recognizing its significance in improving community health.
Operated by the Tambolaka Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG), the MBG program in Southwest Sumba focuses on providing meals to schools and health posts, with a specific emphasis on pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and toddlers. By incorporating locally sourced ingredients and promoting well-balanced nutrition, the program aims to address health challenges and reduce stunting rates in the region. Vincencia’s story reflects how the MBG program is creating a positive change in numerous families in South West Sumba.
